It all started in 1891 with baking powder. Dr. August Oetker developed Backin baking powder at his pharmacy in Bielefeld, Germany, which thanks to the quality of the raw materials and the stable ratio of active ingredients, he was able to guarantee housewives perfect baking results every time. With this outstanding innovation, Dr. August Oetker laid the foundation for a major business enterprise and for the Dr. Oetker brand.
To get the word out, the company published special recipe booklets, ran newspaper advertisements and printed recipe suggestions on the packaging to help cooks. The goal was to communicate the quality and reliability (“succeeds every time”) of this brand-name product, which more than a century later remains a best seller. Dr. Oetker then went on to develop more products, such as Dr. Oetker's pudding mix and others.
Due to the success and continuous expansion of the product range, Dr. Oetker rapidly acquired manufacturing facilities. Shortly after the turn of the century, the company opened its first food factory, which was then expanded several times in the following years to keep up with growing business. Production facilities were also established in other European countries. The sustained growth of Dr. Oetker was rooted in the company’s ability to innovate and introduce new products in line with changing consumer needs. This led to the decision to enter the frozen food and chilled food categories in Europe.
Today, Dr. Oetker production and distribution firms are active in 43 countries. Apart from Germany, the companies operate primarily in Western and Eastern Europe, but also in North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
More than 12,000 staff are employed by Dr. Oetker – about 4,350 of them at five German locations forming part of Dr. August Oetker Nahrungsmittel KG, the German core company. The turnover of the international Dr. Oetker companies totalled Euro 2,593 million in 2018.
Founded in 1891 in Bielefeld by the pharmacist Dr. August Oetker, the family-run business Dr. Oetker ranks among the leading brand manufacturers in the German food industry. In Germany, Dr. Oetker is represented by approximately 1,000 different products and worldwide the company produces more than 4,000 products – still including baking powder and many other baking products, but also baking mixes, decorations, desserts and sweet meals, chilled desserts, preserving products, ready cakes, muesli, frozen pizzas and snacks, refining products, a broad range for bulk consumers and lots more.
